How To Package Yourself To Create Influence In Your Prospects

Personal branding is the science of packaging and marketing yourself as an entity rather than your company or products. You in effect become the product that you market and your company and products are merely the system that is in back of you, giving you the financial and logistical support that is required for you to build a global empire.

Think of Tony Robbins for a moment. There are no doubt tons of motivational and life change experts out there in the industry but there is only one Tony Robbins. Tony Robbins is the brand and the products he has created and promotes are the system that is in back of him.

Think of Robert Kiyosaki. There are finance trainers and teachers all over the planet but Robert Kiyosaki has created a brand that makes him stand out from all others in his field. And not only has he branded himself but he has also branded the products he created.

Should You Totally Stop Marketing Your Company And Products?

I have seen a lot of debate on this issue in forums and discussion groups online but my answer to that is NO, you should not totally stop marketing your products and services. The reason is that there are potential prospects out there that are looking for your products and company by name.

One of my businesses right now has just released a new fat loss product on the market. I have a website promoting this product and I have created videos and Google Adwords campaigns around this product name. I am currently seeing people join my business because they have searched for the product by it’s name and not the term “fat loss”.

But once these people join my business and my team they soon become aware of the fact that I am more than just a network marketer with a product. They soon begin to realise that I have a lot more to offer than just another biz op.

Personal Branding Is Your Point Of Differentiation

Something that you must achieve in your marketing to become successful is to create a point of differentiation.

What is a point of differentiation? It’s that quality of uniqueness that separates you from everyone else out there that is promoting the same company and product. It’s that point where you are no longer just like all the other distributors or MLMers out there that your prospects can chose from.

If you don’t develop an effective point of differentiation you will simply become another sales rep for your company.

This quality of uniqueness will become apparent in your marketing materials and it is this quality that others will become aware of very quickly. Without differentiation you fail.

There Is No Competition

Once again think of our first example with Tony Robbins. What competition does he have? Who is out there ready and waiting to knock him off his number one spot?

I can tell you that no one is there to do that! No one can take away from him what he has because there is only one Tony Robbins. His marketing is unique because he is unique.

To put it simply, when you develop yourself as your own brand you eliminate much of your competition because there is only one you.

Easier To Create Status, Value And Influence

We have mentioned status and value previously but personal branding will create a much higher level of status and value in the eyes of your prospects.

The more effective your personal branding and the better you can convey that the more status and value you will achieve.

Personal branding will also help you develop and promote influence and power in your marketing which will enable you to connect at a higher level with your prospects.

How Do You Develop Personal Branding

This is something that will come with time and practise but just being aware of it in the beginning will help you on the road the personal branding.

One of the keys to doing this is to create within yourself a mindset of value, to fill your mind with valuable information that will be of a major benefit to your prospects so that they perceive that you are an expert that can help them.

For myself I have spent a lot of time studying principles in this industry that work. I have filled my mind with as much information as I possibly can so that I can help others when they are looking to me for help.

Along the way I have experimented with marketing and made many mistakes but in all of it my mind has been opened up to some amazing concepts. I am now in a position where I am putting what I have learnt to work in my marketing.

When I was studying music I used to listen to as many different musicians as I could in order to fill my mind with ideas. I would study different music styles and practise these styles until I became good at them.

But then when I had studied and listened to all of this I would then take those styles that I personally liked and implemented them into my own music style. I was creating my own style as I was learning and growing.

This growth process is vital to your business and you need to be aware of it when creating your own marketing systems. It’s all about taking what you have learnt and creating your own style out of it. And then from that style you will begin to attract those to you who are attracted to your style.

How To Create Desire In Your Prospects That Turns Them Into Hungry Distributors

Become A Solution To Your Prospects Problems

I would like us to go back and re-examine the old school paradigm of network marketing for a moment. You join a brand new MLM company which of course you are very excited about and you can’t wait to get started. You grab your list and pick out someone that you haven’t seen for a while but you figure this person will be hot for the opportunity.

Now let’s assume that your friend has some financial hassles and they are very short of money. So you trot on down to your friends place thinking that they have a great need for the business and layout a presentation about how this business can change their life and set them free financially.

Now ultimately what you are saying about your business is true, it can help them financially and set them up for life. But there is a reality that is closer to home that most distributors never see about their business opportunity.

You see, even though you have a business opportunity that can potentially help them financially, in the end just having the opportunity in their hands wont do much for them. Why? Because they need more than that.

You must remember that your business opportunity is just part of the system. Like having a McDonalds store without the hamburgers. It’s not complete. In order for you to make money from McDonalds you have to have a product, not just own a store. And it’s the same principle here.

By simply bringing people into your business doesn’t mean that you have a real network marketing business. You may just be selling product. A real network marketing business is having people you have sponsored continue in the network marketing paradigm, not just on-sell product.

But getting back to our story… by simply just offering someone a business opportunity doesn’t really do much for them unless you can help them market that opportunity and get them to a point where they can begin to make money themselves.

See… most old school MLM is simply giving people another headache in their life. You aren’t actually helping them solve a problem, you are creating another one. How are they going to market this new business opportunity in order to make money?

The Deception of The Promise

I have personally seen people join an opportunity with the expectation of making money and all their sponsor could tell them was to make a list of their friends and family and hand out flyers. Now that might work for some people but it doesn’t work for most and people these days are looking for more than that.

Do you see the deception in the promise in this example? They haven’t been given the whole package, they have affectively been sold short and they were drawn in by the deception of the promise.

The truth is that those people who you have approached about your business opportunity have not been laying awake at night waiting for you to come around and pitch them on your deal. They probably have not been wishing to get involved in MLM either. In fact until you came along they may not have even heard of the opportunity.

You see… in reality people aren’t looking for a network marketing opportunity. They are looking for what that opportunity can do for them. Which brings me to the next topic…

If You Want To Sell Drills, Teach People How To Use A Drill To Drill A Hole

Mike Dillard put me onto this in Magnetic Sponsoring. Nobody who bought a drill actually wanted a drill, they wanted a hole. So if you want to sell drills, give people information and teach them how they can successfully drill holes using your drills.

It’s that simple… the truth is people only want the end result. That is what they are looking for. So if you want people to join you in your business opportunity, give them information and teach them how to successfully build a home based business using your information and systems.

Doesn’t that make sense?

In effect you need to become a solution provider… not a problem creator. And the better you can do that the better your business opportunity will grow.

In fact this is how you turn average prospects into hot prospects. Your prospects need to have their hot button pushed so bad they can’t stand it. Have you ever been exposed to some form of marketing where you just couldn’t help yourself, you had to take out your credit card and buy the product on the spot. That’s what we are looking for.

Position Yourself As An Expert That Can Help Them

Your goal in all of your marketing efforts is to position yourself as an expert in the eyes of your prospect and as someone who can help them get to where they want to go in life and business.

You are actually becoming a solution provider to your prospects and when people perceive that you can help them they will flock to you by the truck load.

Your company and product at the time of prospecting is almost irrelevant to your prospect. Don’t get me wrong it is vital that you have a great product and company to back you up, but initially your prospect is looking more at you and what you can do for them rather than your business opportunity.

This form of marketing was almost unheard of to the old schoolers. Once again the old school paradigm was that of you chasing them down, trying to close them in on the deal rather than having them come to you with their credit in hand and ready to go.

I liken the old school way of doing MLM to the cave man days. You know the story that back in the cave man days if a man wanted a wife he would go out to look for a woman he liked and when he found her he would hit her over the head with his club to knock her out and drag her back into his cave.

The old school MLM way of doing things is all about you chasing your prospects down and you closing them on the deal. Perhaps you have done this… you make a list of family, friends and people you know and then you systematically work through the list in order to present your opportunity to them.

The paradigm or intention is you chasing them and you closing them into something they had no desire to get involved with before you came along.

Can you imagine if you started a real world business like a franchise of some description and that was how you built your business. Out of a list of your friends and family. Thankfully we have marketing systems that we can implement to attract others to your business.

I used to hate it, and I still do, when someone you haven’t seen or heard from for years will all of a sudden ring you up just for the sole intention of pitching you on their newly discovered business. The have contacted you to re-establish a relationship just for the intention of making them money.

As much as I believed in the principles of success old school MLM generated it was still a horrible way to do business.

Thanks fully that form of business building os now dead and gone.

New School MLM Has Arrived

Thankfully we are in a new age of network marketing where we can create marketing channels that systematically attract others to us and it’s called New School MLM.

New School MLM is simply this… it’s the art of using technology combined with the principles of attraction to systematically draw those people to us who want what we are offering.

Can it get any simpler than that?

With attraction marketing you can position yourself in the market place and have prospects closing themselves into your list and into your business with little effort on your part.

Once a prospect has opted in to your list you can systematically market your products and services to them because they have given you permission to market to them.

Seth Godin, world renowned marketing expert, calls this form of marketing “Permission Marketing” and it has become the basis of how all successful network marketing is being achieved.

How Would You Prefer To Do Business?

Think about that for a moment… how would you prefer to build your business? Making lists of friends and family and chasing them down, trying to cultivate relationships with perfect strangers in order to try and pitch them on your business or would you prefer to have your prospects chasing you down, asking you how they can get involved in what you are doing and closing themselves on your deals.

I spent close to twenty years trying the old method and I was a total failure at it, mainly because deep down inside of me I really didn’t like what I was doing. I hated trying to be something I wasn’t just to try and build a business.

But that is one of the greatest things about this new way of doing business… you can be yourself and like yourself in the process. You can be who you are and build a business from that. How good is that?

It’s No Longer Selling But Consulting

It has been interesting for me to observe this phenomenon taking place in my own business but the new school way of doing MLM has changed the paradigm incredibly.

With the old way it’s all about you becoming the seller and closer. You are the one who has something to sell them and your goal is to close them. You haven’t been invited into their world to help them make a decision, you have somehow made your way in to theirs and are trying to close them.

In effect you have become the hunter.

Now consider the new school way… the prospect has seen your marketing materials, makes a decision themselves that they will contact you, they have invited you into their world and have given you permission to sell them.

You are now in a position of power and leadership and it’s no longer about selling but consulting. Instead of being a seller you are now in the position of a consultant offering expert advice and guidance on how they can best achieve their goals with your system.

You are the guru and they want you in on their world. You have become the hunted and are no longer the hunter.

All of the barriers associated with the selling process have been removed and suddenly you are in a position of status and value. They perceive that you have status because you have gone before them and know something that they don’t and that your expert advice has value.

This mindset is so powerful that these days you simply cannot be affective in this industry without it. If you cannot make the change to this style of business building you simply have no business.

How To Create Status & Value In The Eyes Of Your Prospects

Creating a perception of status and value in the eyes of your prospects is NOT difficult to achieve but it can be a lengthy process and it’s the people who can apply themselves to the process that will rise to the top. And this is true of any profession.

For you to be perceived that you have value in your prospects eyes they have to see in you that you have knowledge and skill that they are looking for, that can help them achieve what they are looking for.

And you get this by simply filling your mind with incredibly valuable knowledge of how to create success in the industry using technology. If your prospect perceives that you have the knowledge, skills and systems that can help them in their journey to success you will be perceived as being a person of value.

If Your Prospects Perceive That You Can Help Them Achieve What They Are Looking For, They Will Flock To You By The Truck Load

I have spent hundreds to thousands of hours reading marketing information, watching videos, participating in forums and a host of other mediums just so that I could develop the mindset to achieve the success I was after.

I also wanted to be able to not only walk the walk but I wanted to talk the talk as well. I wanted my prospects to perceive that I knew what I was talking about.

I have been through this process in other areas in life as well… I was successful in the computer industry before I got into marketing. And I was also a successful musician and achieved high levels of respect in both industries. And it was because I immersed myself into the topic so that I became the expert.

For you to achieve value in this industry you need to fill your mind with all the knowledge that you can about the industry. In your own eyes you need to become an expert. In fact you have to become an expert to yourself before others will perceive it in you.

Status is a little easier than value to achieve. Quite simply, when you have achieve some level of success you will have the status. The two go hand in hand.
